Timing and cost are the two main factors in planning when to do your weekend class.
Au Pairs can choose from three cities to take the one time, 4-credit classes: San Diego, CA; Salt Lake City, UT and Tampa, FL. Classes start on Friday afternoon and end on Monday early afternoon. If you plan ahead you should be able to fly on Friday morning and come home Monday evening. This will minimize lodging expense to you and childcare expense for your host family. If you extend your time either before or after the class days consider it vacation days. NOTE: Make sure you are communicating with your host family if you want to extend and use vacation days. It’s very important to try to coordinate your time off with the family’s schedule whenever possible.
It is good to remember that your class days are NOT vacation days since you will be in class about 10 hours each day. Your schedule during the weekend is very demanding but worth the effort to get as much done as possible towards your education requirement in one weekend. You will still have homework to do when you return so be sure and allow enough time to complete all of it before your deadline (33 days prior to the end of your 1st year).
Overall costs include: the class, class materials, travel (flight and local transportation), food and lodging. Your family contributes $500 towards the expense but the rest is up to you to pay for. You need to budget ahead of time to make sure you can pay for everything. The best way to do that is to set aside money from each week’s stipend. I know it’s hard to do but it’s very important that you make this a priority if you want to stay in good standing in the program.
